While Nabatiyeh’s Democratic Left-affiliated candidate Mohammad Ali Mokalled feels his individual campaign is too small to attract the kind of bullying faced by more prominent non-opposition Shia parties, he has been pressured over his candidacy. He said he receives “messages” through family and friends involved in local politics – as well as over Facebook. He has also been tarred with the same bush as other, external adversaries, being called a “Zionist” or “American”. |

Beirut / Washington - A Lebanese liberal politician from the Shiite community made a strong presentation at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies forum in Washington, DC. He was introduced by Professor Walid Phares.
February 3, 2008 The audience was made of media, think tank representatives and analysts. It was sponsored by the Future of Terrorism Project at FDD. Mr. Ahmad El Assaad, son of the former speaker of the Lebanese Parliament and leader of a new Shiite liberal Party in Lebanon gave a presentation on January 30, 2008, to introduce the audience to the current issues that Lebanon is facing in relation to Hezbollah and the steps to be taken to solve that problem. He argued that the best option for Pluralism among Shiite in Lebanon must begin with an alternative Shiite political party- the Lebanese Option Gathering (LOG). |
